Spotlight on energy projects

EECA follows and shares the progress of clean and clever energy projects around New Zealand, particularly if we have contributed co-funding to the project.

An efficient step forward in construction

Kenai has rolled out its first electric digger to construction sites.

It's quiet, produces no tailpipe emissions, and offers greater torque than diesel models ― making it a win, win, win.

The construction company is finding the compact JCB 19C-1E electric mini-excavator incredibly versatile. It can work in tight spaces, doing everything from preparing retaining walls to handling detailed site tasks with agility and precision.

"Being a compact size, it is ideal where we need odd jobs for digging. And there are a lot of them," says Ettiene Du Preez, Junior Project Manager at Kenai.

The electric digger produces no exhaust emissions, making it great for projects that prioritise emissions reduction. Its low-noise operation also means less disruption in urban areas and sensitive sites, which improves safety and the experience for nearby communities.

The digger's lithium-ion battery powers a full day's work on a single charge, keeping teams on schedule while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Plus, its simplified electric drivetrain lowers maintenance costs, allowing Kenai to operate more effecitively and pass savings onto customers.

The electric mini-excavator was co-funded by EECA through the Low Emissions Transport Fund (LETF).
