Spotlight on energy projects

EECA follows and shares the progress of clean and clever energy projects around New Zealand, particularly if we have contributed co-funding to the project.

Innovation on the water

Tickets are on sale for the world-first electric hydrofoil tourism vessel that will operate as part of the Fullers360 fleet from January 2025.  It will be the world’s first major ferry operator to offer a certified electric hydrofoiling tourism vessel.

Designed and manufactured by Vessev, the VS-9 can ferry up to 10 passengers and travel up to 55km/h while on its foils.

EECA supported the project with co-funding from the Low Emission Transport Fund (LETF). The LETF supports solutions the adoption of low-emission transport technology to decarbonise the New Zealand transport sector.

The project is great example of energy efficiency in action: by flying above the waves, the VS-9 reduces overall energy use while delivering the experience of a larger vessel on an agile platform that can be berthed and charged in nearly any marina. It creates less drag and is much more stable than a traditional vessel.
