Registering products is a requirement under the Energy Efficiency (Energy Using Products) Regulations 2002. It helps EECA monitor compliance with Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and Mandatory Energy Performance Labelling (MEPL) requirements.

Registering a product online

Energy Rating RECAP (Regulatory, Enforcement and Compliance Administration Platform) is the online platform used to register regulated products in New Zealand and Australia.

There are 4 steps to registering a product, which is defined as having a model number, brand, and energy performance characteristics.

In New Zealand, products can only be registered by New Zealand importers or manufacturers.

Check if you need to register

If you manufacture or import a regulated product for sale in New Zealand, you are required to make sure that it is registered before supplying it. Before you begin, check whether the product is regulated and whether it is already registered in Australia.

  • Are you an importer or manufacturer?

If you import or manufacture regulated products that are sold in New Zealand, you have legal obligations that you need to meet. Find out how to comply with the energy using product regulations.

    How to comply

  • Is your product regulated?

Check if your product is regulated by the energy using product Regulations in New Zealand. You can find out if your products are covered by the regulations by viewing our list of products.

  • Is your product already registered?

If your product is already registered in Australia, it doesn’t need to be registered in New Zealand. You can search the registration database to see if a product is already registered.

Products registered in Australia

Products registered in Australia do not need a separate New Zealand registration, but they may still need to meet New Zealand requirements to be supplied here.

Unless the product meets the requirements of the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement (TTMRA), it must meet the New Zealand MEPS and MEPL requirements, even if it is registered in Australia.

How to register your products

Follow these steps to register your regulated products through Energy Rating RECAP.

Steps

  • Keep your registration number

Once the registration is approved, keep a note of the Registration number – you’ll need it to provide sales data. An example of a registration number is ATV1234.

    How to provide sales data

  • Minimal quantities exemption

In specific circumstances where very few products are being imported into New Zealand, importers and manufacturers may be exempt from registering their products.
