EECA maintains a voluntary list of residential and commercial electric vehicle chargers that are approved by EECA based on efficiency and smartness. We welcome applications from suppliers to include their products on the list.

Submit EV chargers to the approved list

The approved list has been developed to help New Zealanders identify, and purchase, EV chargers that use 'smart' technology and are energy efficient.

If your charger meets the technical specifications outlined below, you can fill out our application form to submit your products.

Why we are encouraging smart EV charger uptake

As the number of electric vehicles in New Zealand continues to grow - smart, efficient chargers can help to ensure we are meeting the increasing demand for electricity by helping to shift charger use to off-peak times.

Greater uptake of smart EV chargers is a win-win for industry and consumers – it will improve energy outcomes for New Zealanders by deferring expensive network upgrades, helping to keep energy bills lower, and assisting with meeting our international emissions reduction commitments.

EV charger green paper

EECA has been working alongside industry in this area for some time, with the aim of harnessing the potential of the new, internationally proven technology.

The development of the approved list for smart EV chargers follows EECA’s green paper consultation in August 2022. We received 86 submissions for the green paper, which indicated strong support to move the market towards smart charging, from industry and suppliers.

Feedback has also reflected strong overall support for EECA to provide clear information to the market on smart chargers, available solutions, and their role - due to the many benefits for the energy system.

Technical Specification

The technical specification for smart EV chargers has been produced following feedback from industry and EV charger suppliers.

All electric vehicle supply equipment (including EV chargers) is eligible for inclusion on the approved list, provided it meets the performance criteria outlined in the technical specification, and required information is provided.

EV chargers with two-way (or bi-directional) functionality can also be submitted to be included on the list. EECA does not currently have a specification covering two-way functionality, so these chargers are assessed against EECA's broader technical specification for smart EV chargers, and must meet these requirements as well as have two-way charging capability.
