Objectives
To support organisations using piped natural gas with feasibility studies and business cases that are grounded in rigorous assessment, investigation, and analysis - providing confidence in the success and return on investment of energy projects.
Eligibility
- New Zealand registered businesses that spend more than $250,000 a year on piped natural gas.
- The business or organisation must own or manage the plant or building that the project relates to and be committed to implementing the project.
- The scope of the study must have reasonably explored viable solutions and be competitively priced.
An energy efficiency or renewable energy project can deliver fast paybacks – but you still need to compete for resources and capital against other departments and projects. This programme helps you to build a strong business case with rigorous assessment, investigation and analysis that will give confidence that the project will be a success.
What kind of project is this for?
Co-funding up to 40% of the cost of an eligible feasibility study (up to a maximum of $50,000).
Projects can be in an industrial or commercial setting, and relate to any technology or process that relates to energy efficiency or renewable energy use. For example, you may apply for funding to determine the viability of:
- upgrading the heating system for a commercial complex,
- converting or replacing a Piped Natural Gas heat plant with one that uses renewable fuel.
Applications are assessed on the quality of information provided, and how likely it is that the project will lead to cost-effective energy savings or uptake of renewable energy.
You can use a consultant to develop an application in the name of a business owner or manager. They need to be a qualified independent consultant who has no vested interest in equipment to be used in the project to undertake the study.

EECA’s support for gas users
We’ve updated our support for gas-using businesses as part of the government’s new Gas Transition Loan Guarantee Scheme. Participating banks are offering more favourable lending terms for projects by New Zealand-based businesses looking to reduce their use of piped natural gas.
Our updated co-funding focuses on helping businesses to identify opportunities for reducing reliance on gas and get investment ready.
Head to our gas support page for more information about funding opportunities, plus resources and tools to help you take effective action on reducing gas use.
