EECA has created a technical specification to support the uptake of efficient solar technology in New Zealand. Suppliers of solar products in New Zealand can apply to have their products on the EECA approved solar products list if they meet the technical specification.
About the specification
The specification for solar products provides a set of minimum voluntary requirements covering efficiency and smartness, as well as methods to show how products meet the specification.
It was developed following a period of consultation in September 2025 and is intended to be used by suppliers of solar panels, inverters and batteries.
Scope of the technical specification
The technical specification outlines voluntary requirements for efficiency and demand flexibility of:
- photovoltaic panels
- inverters
- battery systems.
While the focus is on residential systems, the requirements are also applicable to small commercial systems.
The specification may evolve over time as technology and standards develop. Any revision to the specification will have a suitable transition period.
Please note: A revised version was published in May 2026 to include a minor grammatical clarification to the inverter operability clause.

Approved solar product list
EECA has developed a list of residential solar products that are approved by based on efficiency and flexible electricity use. The list of panels and inverters will continue to grow, and batteries will be added soon.
Suppliers of solar products in New Zealand can apply to have their products on the approved list if they meet the technical specification.
