About the EV charger consultation
The Government has agreed to regulate EV chargers with a maximum output power above 2.4kW for smart functionality and energy performance information requirements. EECA is responsible for developing and enforcing the proposed technical requirements.
EECA has released a consultation paper seeking feedback on proposed requirements for EV chargers supplied in New Zealand.
Why we are proposing requirements for EV chargers
Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers are becoming an increasingly important part of New Zealand's energy system.
Smart EV chargers can respond to signals from electricity retailers, networks and other energy management systems, helping consumers reduce charging costs while supporting a more flexible and resilient electricity system.
As electric vehicle uptake grows, smart charging can help manage peak electricity demand and reduce pressure on electricity networks.
What are the proposed requirements for EV chargers
The proposed requirements would support the Government's decision to regulate EV chargers for energy flexibility and include requirements relating to:
- Communication and interoperability
- Charger response capabilities
- Randomised delay and ramp-rate functionality
- Data capture and information availability
- Overload protection
- Software updates
- Information and labelling
- Notification and compliance.
