The Regional Heat Demand Database is an interactive tool designed for government, business and academics wanting to understand how and where  fossil fuels are used by large process heat using sites. It is a key dataset for other EECA products, such as the Regional Energy Transition Accelerator(external link).

The data is aggregated to the regional level, and can be filtered by region, sector, and fuel type. A variety of key metrics can then be viewed as maps, charts, or downloaded as CSV files.

Last updated: August 2024

Data was collected for the South Island across 2021 and 2022, and for the North Island across 2022 and 2023. The data has been validated against, and supplemented with, data collected through EECA’s Regional Energy Transition Accelerator (RETA) programme of work, to ensure the dataset is of the highest quality currently achievable.

Regional Heat Demand Database Data [CSV 18 KB]

Longer term it is planned that the Regional Heat Demand Database will be maintained and updated with the most current information available on the process heat data picture, and this will include clean fuel usage for process heat as well.

Detailed raw data can be made available to New Zealand government agencies for the purposes of work relating to New Zealand's decarbonisation. For more information contact EECAenquiries@eeca.govt.nz with the subject line "Regional Heat Demand Database".

About the Regional Heat Demand Database

The Regional Heat Demand Database (RHDD) is a regional and sector level aggregation of fossil fuel consuming sites in New Zealand using process heat with a capacity of at least 500 kw. The raw data was collected by EECA, in partnership with DETA Consulting, Electricity Distribution Businesses and Transpower. The expression of the aggregated data picture through this visualisation tool is an EECA product.

Unless stated otherwise, demand refers to the amount of fuel used to supply the heat requirements. Due to metering and other limitations, many sites are unable to supply reliable information about the amount of heat supplied from their equipment e.g. the amount of steam supplied by their boilers. For this reason, the amount of fuel used by a site’s equipment has been used as a proxy for the heat demand e.g. the GWh of fuel used by their boilers.

Data available in the open dataset

  • The installed capacity of the equipment used to supply the heat, in MW,
  • The annual demand of fuels, in GWh,
  • Region and sector breakdowns.

This data is aggregated by region and by sector, and if there are fewer than three sites in a region/sector aggregation, then information is suppressed to maintain anonymity.

The following fuel types are included in the dataset: Coal, Natural Gas, Diesel, LPG, Biomass, Geothermal and By-products.

Regional aggregation

Regions are based on Statistics NZ region definitions; this being chosen over grouping by EDB to maintain anonymity in an open database. This release covers regions across the whole country - Nelson/Marlborough/Tasman, West Coast, Canterbury, Otago, Southland, Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Horizons (Manawatu-Wanganui) and Wellington.
