Spotlight on energy projects

EECA follows and shares the progress of clean and clever energy projects around New Zealand, particularly if we have contributed co-funding to the project.

Saving fuel among the vines

Treasury Wine Estates (TWE), in partnership with New Zealand Winegrowers (NZW) and EECA, recently demonstrated how emerging technology is helping the wine industry improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

TWE’s hybrid unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) were developed by New Zealand agritech company Robotics Plus. The UGVs are currently being trialled across three of TWE’s Marlborough vineyards for spraying and herbicide application, replacing diesel tractors. Early results are promising, with fuel use dropping by around 70%.

NZW General Manager Sustainability Dr Edwin Massey says automation will be critical for cutting diesel demand in vineyards, which today contributes around 9% of sector emissions. The trial supports TWE’s global commitment to achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.

Ben Harris, TWE Viticulturalist, says the trial is already demonstrating productivity and sustainability gains, with opportunities to extend autonomous functions across up to 150 hectares.

EECA Group Manager Partnerships and Delivery, Richard Briggs, says the trial is a strong example of industry collaboration:

“It’s encouraging to see innovative growers and technology partners working together to embrace renewable energy for affordability and security – lowering reliance on imported diesel. Automation has real potential to help the sector improve efficiency and cut emissions.”

This year, TWE has also installed a 210 kW rooftop solar array at their Matua Valley winery site in Marlborough as part of their wider move to achieve net zero Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030.

TWE demonstrated the UGVs to others in the wine sector to share valuable insight into how automation can support workforce transition, improve day-to-day operations, and advance the wine industry’s shared sustainability goals.
