This research looks at small- and medium-sized businesses that use gas. It explores the impacts they are experiencing as New Zealand’s gas supply is under pressure, and their perceptions about the opportunities and barriers.
The work was commissioned by EECA to better understand how to support these businesses in the current market.
About the research
The research was conducted by our research partner Verian as a qualitative deep dive with a small number of stakeholders to build our understanding of their current experience in order to focus our efforts and support valuably.
Verian interviewed 22 business stakeholders and 3 industry association representatives from a number of sectors, between September and October 2025.
Summary of key findings
Overall, the study found that small-medium sized businesses are facing uncertainty, and don’t see a clear way out. The perceived challenges highlighted in the research included:
- future gas pricing and supply is a major driver of inertia and delays in taking action
- many SMEs operate specialist equipment and processes that currently rely on gas
- businesses do not see a strong incentive to be ‘early movers’ in responding to gas supply uncertainty
- in many industries there is no clear, well-established pathway to transition away from gas.
Businesses in New Zealand are looking for support
The study found a clear appetite for support, particularly in the form of practical, tailored information from EECA. Businesses are looking for:
- clarity on different fuel and technology options
- guidance that is specific to their sector and business context.
