How to find solar companies, request and review quotes, and what to expect during the installation phase.
Researching solar companies
Check online to get a feel for what solar companies offer. Then pick some to explore further and look at:
- service offered — solar system only or solar system plus installation?
- guarantees — are equipment warranties included?
- company size — sole operator or national chain?
- time in business — established or new?
- potential savings — any package deals or discounts available?
- reviews from customers — positive or critical?
- clarity of website information — easy to understand or hard?
It could be worth checking if the company is a member of a body or organisation like SEANZ (Sustainable Electricity Association of New Zealand) or Master Electricians.
And if you know people with solar installed, ask them about their experiences during this research stage.
Getting solar quotes for your home
Just as you would with any home improvement project, it pays to get a few quotes to compare offerings and prices.
Identify 3 solar companies to get quotes from. For more accurate quotes and fewer unexpected costs, tell them about:
- your solar system needs — normal annual power usage, desired kWh capacity, battery or not, any future additions
- any limitations to the install — roof space and height, budget.
Most solar companies will visit your home as part of the quoting process. That’s an excellent time to ask questions.
Comparing quotes
Once you’ve got the quotes, review them for:
- clarity — do you understand exactly what you’ll be getting?
- tailoring to your situation — have they listened to you?
- what you get for the price — will it meet your needs and be affordable?
- length of warranties — the longer the better
- hardware quality — are online reviews of the panels, inverter and any battery favourable?
Activating finance
Most banks offer green loans that can be used to finance solar systems. You need to have a quote before you can apply for financing from your bank.
How a solar installation happens
An install often involves an electrician, an installation crew and inspectors.
Building consent is no longer required to install rooftop solar panels on most existing homes (with some exceptions).
Once you’ve accepted a quote and made a deposit, the solar company will set an installation date.
How long does an install take?
The process is usually quick — around 2 weeks. Installing the panels might only take 1 to 3 days, but getting connected can take longer.
There might be delays if any parts need to be ordered and shipped. The complexity of the install can also affect the timeframe. For example, if your roof is very high up, scaffolding might be needed for worker safety.
