Tether is a New Zealand-owned building performance and energy analytics company specialising in measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) solutions. The company is hardware agnostic, deploying a range of devices from wireless IoT sensors to hard-wired metering, then combining that data with cloud-based analytics to produce measurable, auditable sustainability and energy efficiency outcomes.
Tether supports customers end to end, from establishing the baseline through to ongoing verification and reporting. The platform provides continuous monitoring and verification infrastructure that supports energy performance validation, sustainability reporting and access to sustainable finance pathways. It also supports building certification frameworks including NZGBC Green Star Performance and NABERSNZ, with accredited specialists on the team, through ongoing monitoring and reporting capability.
Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) platform
Tether does not directly provide project finance. Instead, it provides the measurement, monitoring and verification infrastructure that unlocks access to finance through third-party providers, including sustainable lending products and voluntary carbon market pathways.
Through its partnership with ASB Bank, Tether customers may access sustainable finance products including the Business Sustainability Loan, Green Property Loan and Sustainable Transition Loan supported by verified performance data.
Tether is one of the few providers in New Zealand able to support asset finance linked to European voluntary carbon markets through verified energy performance and carbon reporting infrastructure.
Areas of expertise
Energy measurement, verification and sustainable finance access
Tether establishes energy baselines and tracks consumption in real time across IoT and hard-wired monitoring systems. Verified performance data gives customers auditable evidence of energy and emissions improvements to support access to sustainable finance.
Voluntary carbon market pathway support
The platform provides continuous monitoring and reporting infrastructure to support participation in voluntary carbon markets and carbon credit methodologies.
Building performance monitoring and certification
Tether's team includes Green Star Performance and NABERSNZ accredited specialists, and the company deploys and manages sensor infrastructure supporting certification across energy, indoor environmental quality, water and occupancy categories.
Project capability
Project size: NZ$5,000 to NZ$2 million
Delivery approach: Delivery using a combination of in-house capability, delivery partners and subcontractors depending on project requirements.
Project process
To establish energy baselines and configure monitoring, Tether works from information such as:
- Twelve months of energy bills
- Electrical system schematics
- Details of major building assets such as HVAC systems, boilers and chillers
Customers do not need to have this ready (although it helps). Tether can help locate and gather it as part of the engagement, and carries out an on-site assessment to capture any additional operational and asset data.
Funding and ownership
Repayment and risk
Tether is a SaaS-based monitoring and analytics provider. Services are typically charged through subscription arrangements per monitored device, alongside one-off hardware and commissioning costs.
Subscription agreements generally range from 1–3 years, with larger portfolio deployments extending to 3–5 years.
Under the full-service delivery model, Tether retains delivery, technology and measurement risks, while customers retain operational control of monitored assets.
Ownership
During the agreement, ownership structures vary by project and may include direct ownership, leasing or pay-as-you-use models. At the end of the agreement, arrangements vary according to the commercial structure in place.
Upfront capital required: Some upfront capital contribution is generally required for monitoring equipment and commissioning costs. This is often covered with the finance component.
Financing arrangement: Tether supports access to finance through third-party funding providers and sustainable lending pathways.
