Underutilised energy technologies and our work

EECA wants to hear from respondents with information about technologies and solutions that are technically feasible but may be underutilised in New Zealand. EECA is specifically interested in the opportunities for commercial and industrial organisations to adopt new technologies and processes in the areas of efficient process heat, geothermal, biogas and biomass.

This information will help find energy opportunities for businesses

The information provided will help EECA better understand current market thinking, opportunities and developing technologies, and the potential to supply commercial and industrial businesses with reliable and affordable process heat to reduce their energy costs, or support businesses to consider other energy sources.

The energy sector is transforming rapidly, driven by technological advancements and increasing deployment of renewable energy. EECA is interested in the opportunities for commercial and industrial sector organisations to adopt new technologies and processes in the areas of efficient process heat, geothermal, biogas and biomass.

Our four focus areas for this RFI

We are interested in information about technologies that may be commercially proven internationally but have no, or limited, deployment in New Zealand.

We have four focus areas:

  • High efficiency electrical heating technologies such as mechanical vapour recompression (MVR), microwave and radio-frequency heating, or induction heating.
  • Advanced demand-side wood energy technologies such as pulverized, or powdered, biomass burners, wood gasification for on-site combustion, and CO2 capture technologies.
  • Indirect uses of low temperature geothermal energy. This includes the upgrading of ambient or low temperature geothermal (under 100 degrees) resources with ground source heat pumps for industrial and commercial applications.
  • Biogas technologies for direct use on site, including technologies and processes to enable a site to use its own organic waste streams for energy.

You can also submit information about other renewable technologies that you think would be particularly relevant to commercial or industrial businesses but are currently underutilised, have good replication potential and are technically feasible.

We are seeking information about the technologies and their applications, key technical characteristics, their deployment potential, commercial/technology readiness (including factors affecting commercial viability in New Zealand),  and barriers to uptake. Responses can include information on specific potential projects or partially developed projects.

This is a request for information only

This is not a procurement or opportunity to request co-investment from EECA and as such respondents should not include:

  • proposals for project co-funding - this RFI is a request for information only
  • formal quotes or pricing commitments
  • information that would typically be exchanged during procurement or partnership development processes.
