E3 develops 2 measures—MEPS and MEPL

Both measures are reviewed regularly to keep pace with technology and to continue to raise energy performance.

  • Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) - products must meet minimum energy efficiency standards to be sold in New Zealand.
  • Mandatory Energy Performance Labelling (MEPL) - the Energy Rating Label helps consumers compare energy efficiency and running costs of different products when deciding what to buy.

Trans-Tasman strategy

The Equipment Energy Efficiency (E3) Strategic Plan was developed collaboratively by the New Zealand and Australian state and territory governments through the E3 Programme.

The Strategy sets a long-term vision for improving the energy performance of appliances and equipment, delivering practical benefits for households, businesses and the wider energy system while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

What the Strategy delivers

The E3 Strategy focuses on three key outcomes:

  • Improved energy efficiency for household, commercial and industrial products.
  • Empowered consumers, through clearer and more accessible energy information.
  • Flexible energy use, ensuring smart appliances and equipment capable of shifting their energy use are available to consumers.

Efficient products produce fewer carbon emissions

New Zealand participates in E3 through a trans-Tasman Policy Framework and Funding Arrangement. The arrangement provides an agreed collaborative work practice among the energy efficiency regulators of Australia and New Zealand in the implementation, compliance and enforcement of MEPS, MEPL and other agreed projects.

Collaborating with Australia means we share the cost of regulation, making it easier and cheaper for businesses trading in both countries to comply.

  • We develop and monitor compliance with the Regulations. We help importers, manufacturers and retailers to understand and fulfil their legal obligations under the Regulations.
  • The products we buy keep getting more efficient, thanks to MEPS and MEPL. EECA tracks how much energy we save.
