LED lamps

We are planning a profile for LEDs in 2015 which considers MEPS and labelling options.

Product consultation

We've developed a product profile which looks into the potential for improving the quality of LED lighting.

Efficient LED lamps are widely available in New Zealand, but many consumers still use older inefficient lamps (mains voltage halogens in Australia and incandescent bulbs in New Zealand). Monitoring of LED lighting in the market indicates that technology is developing rapidly with LED lighting having the potential to broaden the range of energy efficient lighting options available to consumers. LED lamps are becoming more affordable as well. However evaluation of LED products currently available in the marketplace indicates a wide variation in quality and efficacy. As a result, there is a concern that consumer experience of expensive, poor quality LEDs will impact upon their willingness to buy LED products in the future.

A number of policy options for LED lighting products within the scope of this product profile are discussed and more than one option could be implemented at the same time.

A meeting to discuss the commercial lighting profile and the LED profile is planned for 17 September 2015. The meeting will be held in Auckland. Email regs@eeca.govt.nz by 30 August 2015 if you would like to attend.

You can email submissions to regs@eeca.govt.nz. Submissions should state ‘LED Product Profile’ in the subject heading. The closing date for submissions is 9 October 2015.
