Ballasts for fluorescent lamps
Ballasts for linear fluorescent lamps must comply with minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) if they’re to be sold in New Zealand.

Our guidelines tell you which products are covered by MEPS and rating labels, and how to register products and comply with the regulations.
We've developed a product profile to investigate the potential of energy efficiency improvements in commercial lighting. Commercial lighting is estimated to use about 8.9PJ a year in New Zealand (BRANZ/EECA 2015). MEPS was introduced in 2002 for linear fluorescent lamps and ballasts. Since this time there have been improvements in lighting technology and international standards. However the report finds that the market has not been keeping up with new technologies, and use of old inefficient lighting is common. This report considers options to improve efficiency in currently available products like linear fluorescent lamps and ballasts.
A meeting to discuss the commercial lighting profile and the LED profile is planned for 17 September 2015. The meeting will be held in Auckland. Email firstname.lastname@example.org by 30 August 2015 if you would like to attend.
You can email submissions to email@example.com. Submissions should state ‘Commercial Lighting Product Profile’ in the subject heading. The closing date for submissions is 25 September 2015.
