National EV qualification launchedWEB

MITO New Zealand developed an EV qualification framework that has resulted in the launch of a national qualification.

Read about the project

The New Zealand Certificate in Electric Vehicle Automotive Engineering (Level 5) is New Zealand’s first national qualification that allows automotive technicians to fully upskill on safely inspecting, servicing and repairing electric vehicles.

This project was led by MITO, who develop qualifications and training programmes that support industries such as automotive and transport.

The qualification increases consumer confidence when it comes to buying an EV by giving EV owners a choice as to where their vehicle is serviced. Industry welcomed the development.

The project was approved for $53,282 of co-funding in round three of the Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund.

Insights from this project

  • Understanding the training capacity and capability across the automotive sector at this early stage of EV uptake was important.
  • It was important to develop a training programme leading to the Level 5 qualification that incorporated specialist provision of practical training and assessment.
