ENERGY STAR® product specifications
To qualify for ENERGY STAR, products must meet the energy efficiency specifications set for their product category. For example, for whiteware both standby and operational power are part of the specification. Whereas for DVD players and audio equipment, currently only standby power use is measured.
The specifications are designed so that when first launched, approximately the top 25% of models in a product category will qualify for the ENERGY STAR mark.
Depending on the product category, the specifications are developed in the USA or New Zealand.
From time to time specifications are improved and upgraded to keep up with developments in product technology and to provide incentive for manufacturers to constantly improve the energy efficiency of products.
