Study of house energy rating tools

This study was commissioned by EECA to investigate how a range of existing house energy rating tools may meet the requirements for New Zealand’s Home Energy Rating Scheme.

The study evaluates six tools – New Zealand’s ALF, Australia’s AccuRate, the United Kingdom’s NHER, Canada’s HOT2000, Australia’s FirstRate 5 and the United States of America’s SUNREL.

EECA has now selected AccuRate as the preferred option to meet the needs of New Zealand’s Home Energy Rating Scheme. It should be noted that EECA’s decision-making process was not limited to the findings in this report. Other factors that impacted on the decision include:

  • Advice from building energy specialists in our Expert Advisory Group;
  • Cost of the tools and associated training infrastructure;
  • Availability of the tools and associated training infrastructure;
  • Time constraints.
