Biofuels

The EECA Transport Fuels programme supports the introduction of renewable transport fuels into New Zealand. Our focus is on low level blends of biodiesel in diesel and bioethanol in petrol that can be used in existing cars without modification.

Biofuels have many benefits over conventional fossil fuels, including:

  • lower net carbon dioxide emissions
  • New Zealand source of renewable energy.

Biofuels sales obligation

The New Zealand government has announced a biofuels sales obligation that will require fuel companies to start selling biofuels from 2008. The obligation will start on 1 July 2008 if the legislation is completed in sufficient time, although some oil companies may start selling biofuels before this.

For further information about the sales obligation, please visit the Ministry of Transport website.

For information on the progress on biofuels policy and legislation please visit the Ministry of Economic Development website and the parliament website.
