Switching schools to renewable heating solutions
As part of a pilot programme, EECA is helping schools to adopt renewable heating solutions through the provision of free capital to make the switch. Capital funding is available for eligible schools up to a maximum of $50,000.
Funding is available to schools that –
- Have the potential to substantially reduce their CO2 emissions
- Are state-funded and located in Auckland, Rotorua, Canterbury and Otago/Southland regions
- Are willing to have their school’s heating energy use monitored by a third party and allow the results to be published to help promote energy efficiency and renewable energy use.
Rotorua Girls High School is just one of the many schools that has chosen a renewable heating solution. In 2006 they converted their boiler from burning coal to wood pellets – and in the process they have reduced their net CO2 emissions generated from heating to nearly zero as well as reducing their air pollution by 60%.
