Proposed MEPS and labelling for televisions

Under proposed standards for this product, televisions would be required to meet MEPS and display energy rating labels from sometime in late 2011.

Future work around other home entertainment appliances

There are a range of other home entertainment appliances that have not yet been investigated for energy efficiency improvements, including:

  • set top boxes that include additional features (like hard drives and recorders)
  • video players and recorders (including Blue-Ray, DVD, hard disk recorders)
  • home theatre system players and recorders
  • audio amplifiers
  • gaming consoles

There are potential benefits to increasing the efficiency of some or all of these products because:

  • a significant amount of energy is consumed by these products when not in use, as they tend to be left in stand-by or passive mode
  • ownership of these types of products is continuing to grow, and
  • energy consumption of these products as a whole is increasing.

The New Zealand government has indicated that it is interested in looking at options for increasing energy efficiency in this category, as part of a joint work programme with Australia.

Any proposals for energy efficiency standards for home entertainment will be developed in consultation with stakeholders and the costs and benefits will be fully assessed before final decisions are made. Proposals may include overall energy use of selected products, as well as standby power use.
