South Island excels in energy efficiency awards

5 May 2009
South Island businesses and individuals are shining when it comes to excellence in energy efficiency and renewable energy, according to a list of award finalists released by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.

South Islanders make up almost half of the finalists in the 2009 Awards for excellence and innovation in energy efficiency and renewable energy, hosted by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).

A vineyard in Marlborough producing premium quality wine, a felted carpet maker in Christchurch and the Otago Regional Council are all finalists competing for top honours in the 2009 Awards. Three of the four nominees for the Outstanding Contribution Award are also from the South Island - Professor Gerry Carrington from the University of Otago, Russell Devlin from Solarchitect Limited, Christchurch and Professor Ann Smith from Landcare Research, Lincoln.

"There is strong representation from South Island organisations and individuals, and I applaud their efforts," EECA's chief executive Mike Underhill said.

"Energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives are smart ways to combat both the recession and climate change. All of New Zealand can learn from these Awards 2009 finalists. The great results from the finalists should encourage more Kiwi organisations to future proof with smart energy management initiatives. The finalists have all factored energy efficiency or renewable energy into their everyday operations," Mr Underhill said.

The 23 companies and individuals have been chosen from 100 entries to go through to the finals of the 2009 Awards. The finalists cover nine categories and are all in the running for the prestigious Supreme Award for outstanding performance.

A full list of finalists and categories is listed below.

The Awards 2009 presentation takes place in Auckland on Thursday 21 May 2009, hosted by EECA in conjunction with principal sponsors EcoInsulation, Fujitsu General New Zealand and Shell New Zealand.
