Innovation Fund project - DH Kim Family Trust
The Victoria Hotel, Dunedin
The Victoria Hotel is located in central Dunedin and includes 40 guest rooms, two bars and a restaurant. The annual electricity consumption of the building is more than $55,000.
This variation of a typical solar water heating installation includes the connection of six solar collectors with a total size of 21m2 to the main cylinder by way of a heat exchanger and a pumped closed loop circuit with expansion vessel and Solastat controller. When the main cylinder has been heated a circulating pump will transfer excess heat into the secondary cylinder, thus reducing the storage losses of the system when solar gain is small but having additional heat storage when solar gain is high, these cylinders have a capacity of 2000L.
The environmental benefits of the project will be promoted as part of the hotel's marketing strategy.
The performance of this system will be monitored for 12 months and be compared to electricity data that has been collected over previous years.
