Refrigerated display cabinets (commercial refrigerators and freezers)
Refrigerated display cabinets are appliances such as fridges and freezers in supermarkets, food malls, cafes and bars.
Some commercial refrigerator compressors are self-contained and others are remote (the motor is at a distance from the fridge) - both types must comply with minimum energy performance standards (MEPS). This includes both the compressor and fridge portion of a remote type unit.
You can not sell refrigerated display cabinets unless they are tested, registered and pass MEPS requirements, as regulated under the Energy Efficiency (Energy Using Products) Regulations 2002.
Refrigerated display cabinets are being considered as part of an overall review of commercial refrigeration. Find out more about the draft refrigeration strategy.
Regulatory requirements
There are steps you must take to meet the requirements of Energy Efficiency (Energy Using Products) Regulations 2002.

Standards
The Standards for testing refrigerated display cabinets are AS 1731 parts 1 to 13, and AS 1731.14 - 2003 which sets out the registration and minimum energy performance standard (MEPS) requirements. The Standards are available at Standards New Zealand.
A discussion document closed in October 2008 on a proposal to align the test method under the existing Standard AS 1731:2003 with the revised International Standards Organisation (ISO) Standard ISO 23953.
