Step 3: registering

Importers and manufacturers are required to complete and submit the prescribed forms to EECA in order to register their product for sale in New Zealand.  It is free to register products.

Models already registered by an Australian regulator do not need to be registered by EECA to be sold in New Zealand, provided the model and brand are identical to the product registered in Australia.  Models registered in New Zealand can also be sold in Australia provided they have been imported into, or manufactured in, New Zealand before being exported to Australia.

To check which products are registered see the Energy Rating website.

Registering products

The easiest way to register a product is to complete the form online at the Energy Rating website.

You will be required to:

  • Apply for a log-in ID
  • Download a user guide
  • Complete and submit the prescribed form(s) to EECA

The product models listed in the form are then listed on the Energy Rating website. The applicant receives a notification by email to confirm that the listing submitted has been processed.

Validity of registration

The registration for your product remains valid until the Standard for that product is changed or updated. This typically would be to change the test method, the MEPS level, or the energy ratings. Once a change takes effect the transitional provisions contained within the Regulations apply.

Updates to the Regulations will be advertised on the Energy Rating website and notified by EECA on this website.

To be added to the contact list for a particular product, and receive updates on any upcoming changes for that product, you can contact the Products team on 0800 358 676 or +64-4-470 2200 or email us at regs@eeca.govt.nz.

Exporting products

New Zealand suppliers and manufacturers seeking to export their products to Australia may need to be aware of issues under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Arrangement (TTMRA), which facilitate trans-Tasman trade. For more information, go to the Ministry of Economic Development.
