Large industrial companies show commitment to energy efficiency
20 November 2006
Engineering managers from seventeen companies with a combined energy spend of over $865 million, will gather at New Zealand Aluminium Smelters (NZAS) tomorrow to hear about best practice in energy efficiency from Australian expert Gordon Skerry.
The Large Energy Users Forum is an annual event organised by the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority (EECA) in partnership with industry, to promote best practice in energy management to businesses with an energy spend of over $5 million per annum.
“We are delighted to be working with NZAS on this forum.” said Angus Davidson Acting Chief Executive of EECA.
“NZAS are leaders in energy efficiency and set a great example for other New Zealand businesses. NZAS have implemented an energy efficiency programme that has resulted in a decrease in CO2 emissions by 40% since 1990, while increasing their output by 26%. NZAS also dedicates 80% of its research and development to energy efficiency.
“Energy is a major cost for the companies attending the forum and they are all already taking a number of steps to manage it efficiently. However, energy management is a process of continuous improvement and through this forum EECA is encouraging businesses to take their energy management to the next level,” said Mr Davidson.
Companies represented at this year’s Forum include:
- Fonterra
- Carter Holt Harvey
- Dongwha Patinna
- New Zealand Refining Company
- Norske Skog
- Nelson Pine
- Oceana Gold
- Canterbury Meatpackers
- Heinz Wattie’s
- ANZCO Foods
- PPCS
- Alliance Group
- Winstone Pulp
- New Zealand Steel

Guest speaker at the forum, Gordon Skerry, is Principal Energy Adviser for Rio Tinto, NZAS’ Australian parent company. He has extensive energy efficiency experience both as an energy consultant and in engineering management roles in pulp, paper, process and chemical and mining engineering industries.
EECA works with large industrial energy users to help them get more for their energy dollar and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through improved energy efficiency.
