ENERGY STAR® helps warm freezing shortest day
22 June 2007
With winter’s bite clamping down, and freezing weather for the year’s shortest day set to keep us cooped up inside, New Zealanders will be thinking about how to keep a lid on their energy use.
The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) has two words for people anxious about their burgeoning energy bills – “Energy Star”.
The Energy Star mark is the independent, international benchmark for energy efficiency and is awarded to the top 25% ofp roducts.
In New Zealand, the Energy Star mark is found on a growing range of products ranging from computers and televisions, to dishwashers and – most recently – washing machines.
Importantly, for this time of year, there are also eight brands of heat pump that carry the Energy Star mark.
“Heat pumps are one of the most energy efficient and effective heating options because they give the most heat for the least amount of money,” EECA Chief Executive Mike Underhill said.
“The MetService is predicting that this year’s shortest day [officially tomorrow, Friday June 22nd] will be freezing and is advising that people stay inside if possible. An Energy Star qualified heat pump will make your home or office more comfortable and less expensive to heat.
“Heating makes up about a third of a household’s energy bill, so any savings in this area make a big difference to your power bill. An Energy Star qualified heat pump will save you about $150 each year over a less efficient unit, and, because it uses less energy, it’s better for the environment,” Mr Underhill said.
Like any heating option, Energy Star qualified heat pumps give the best savings when they are used smartly. EECA’s advice is to:
- Only heat the spaces that you’re actually using, and shut doors and curtains to keep the heat in.
- Don't have the temperature higher than you need it – aim for between 20-23 degrees while you're using a space and then 16 degrees overnight if required.
- Use the timer features so your heat pump comes on an hour or so before you get home, instead of leaving it on all day.
- Make sure your house is well insulated, otherwise you could lose up to 75% of the heat you are paying for through your ceiling, walls and floor.
Energy Star qualified heat pumps are widely available through specialist heat pump dealers and home appliance stores.
