Recent research has shown that a building energy rating scheme (BERS) would be a cost effective measure to promote the improved energy performance of commercial buildings.

Given the benefits, EECA wants to promote the use of BERS in New Zealand. Although a number of BERS operate effectively overseas, none are yet established in New Zealand.

As an introductory measure, EECA would like to facilitate a BERS into New Zealand to be delivered by industry. This BERS would provide a quick, simple and inexpensive energy rating.

This report presents findings from a series of interviews social service providers (referred to as stakeholders) and individuals from low income households around New Zealand (respondents). Interviews were carried out during the winter of 2009 in South Auckland, Gisborne, New Plymouth, Christchurch, Greymouth and Hokitika, and Southland.

This report outlines research conducted by the University of Otago which looks at the heating and cooling potential of moving roof space air into a home's living areas, as the most common type of home ventilation system does.

The report recommends that this type of ventilation system - known as a "positive pressure" or "roof cavity" system - is not promoted or installed based on potential heating or cooling benefits.

EECA was a part-funder of this Otago University research report.

A great example of a home built with energy performance in mind is the 'Little Greenie' in Golden Bay.

Little Greenie, designed and built by Lawrence McIntyre, is the highest rated energy efficient house in the country (9/10 stars) and provides exceptional levels of comfort with heating bills of less than $70 per year.
