Hot water

This report has been commissioned by Murray Cowan of Bio-Energy Equipment Ltd to ascertain the viability of using a highly automated purpose-built wood chip type Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) boiler to provide hot water heating for a dairy shed wash down along with space heating and Domestic Hot Water (DHW) for nearby farm houses.

Thames Coramandel District Council installed a 200kW wood chip boiler at their Centennial Pool. This monitoring report outlines the reasons for the project, the issues with the installation, the savings made, and the expected payback of the project.

Ashburn Clinic in Dunedin commissioned an ETA Hack 200 195kW woodchip boiler to replace an old LPG/coal boiler. Switching from gas to woodchip, with a secure wood fuel supply agreement, had a 1.6 year simple payback. EECA provided a $100,000 Wood Energy grant towards the project. A buffer tank was also installed to optimise boiler operation and the existing coal bunker was cost-effectively renovated into a wood fuel store.
