Where wood processing residues are insufficient to meet the fuel demand for a biomass fuelled boiler then alternative fuel supplies need to be considered. One fuel to consider is forest residues at landings and skid sites within the forests. Providing factors affecting supply are appropriately evaluated then these forest residues can be a cost effective fuel.

Transitionz Group Ltd (TGL) was commissioned by EECA to monitor and report on the installation. A questionnaire was drafted and a site visit arranged with AgR's Mark Cameron. The boiler and associated plant was inspected by TGL's Lloyd McGinty during a site visit on Friday 19th May 2009. This report collates the information from the questionnaire and site visit.

Pan Pac Forest Products Ltd at Whirinaki, Napier, require a Fuel Handling and Management system to store and deliver fuel for their 36MWth Easteel Bubbling Fluid Bed (BFB) Boiler.
Their fuel comprises coarse green Woodwaste and dry shavings. These require storing separately and then delivering to the energy plant in a blended and metered condition according to furnace demand.

Much more of New Zealand's forest harvest leftovers could be converted into valuable energy, according to a study commissioned by the Forest Industry Development Agenda (FIDA).
Production of biomass fuels from forest harvest residue is not a new idea, but the FIDA research highlights the potential for turning New Zealand's harvest residue - about one million tonnes a year - into energy for the industrial heat sector and beyond.
