ENERGY STAR®

New Zealand recently adopted the ENERGY STAR programme. ENERGY STAR is the global mark of energy efficiency. It is awarded to the most energy efficiency appliances and products.

ENERGY STAR is being phased into New Zealand, with new products added each year. The first phase, from July 2005 to June 2006, covers home electronics and office equipment.

ENERGY STAR is a United States government-backed program. It has over 40 product categories and thousands of products for the home and office. It is established internationally in the United States, Australia, Canada, the European Union, United Kingdom and Taiwan. In 2004 alone, it is estimated that the ENERGY STAR programme saved the United States 4 per cent of their total electricity usage.

Energy rating labels

Energy rating labels show how appliances measure up to performance standards. For example, on air conditioners and heat pumps, the label provides information on energy use - cooling in blue, heating in red - and the capacity of the appliance.

An appliance’s energy consumption is measured with the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) for cooling, or the Coefficient of Performance (CoP) for heating. From these ratios a Star Rating is determined.
