The Energy End-Use Database is an interactive data tool for analysts, researchers and modellers to understand how energy is being used in New Zealand. It is a key data input for other EECA products, such as the Energy Scenarios TIMES-NZ model.

The data can be filtered by sector, fuel type, end-use and technologies. Then it can be viewed as a sankey or bar chart, or downloaded as a CSV file. Current data can also be compared with previous years going back to 2017.

About the Energy End Use Database (EEUD)

Energy End Use Database (EEUD) is a unique New Zealand data asset maintained by Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) enabling insights and analysis of energy use across sectors and technology by government, industry, and academia.

The EEUD provides annual estimates of how energy is used across the New Zealand economy. Delivered energy estimates are provided for fuel types, sectors, end uses and technologies. The current published data covers years 2017 to 2023. The data is always released for the previous year soon after the MBIE Energy Balances are released.

Energy use estimates are derived using a top down approach based on MBIE’s annual high-level sector/fuel energy demand data and proportioned into further disaggregated sectors, end use applications and technology values using bottom up data held by EECA.

Short guide on categories in the database

The EEUD is split into four categories – Sector, Fuel Type, End Use, and Technology. Each category has two levels (group level and disaggregated level), as tabled below with examples. The levels are shown in the tool as filter options in the dropdown boxes (i.e., the user can select to view the data by Sector Group, or by Sector for more disaggregation. For complete lists refer to the documentation linked below.

Category Level Examples
Sector Sector Group Industrial, Residential
Sector Dairy Product Manufacturing, Mining
Fuel type Fuel Group Fossil Fuels (direct use), Renewables (direct use), Electricity (direct use)
Fuel Coal, Natural Gas, Electricity
End use End Use Goup Heating, Electronics and Lighting
End Use Low Temperature Heat (<100 C), Water Heating, Lighting
Technology Technology Group Heating/Cooling Devices, Stationary Motors
Technology Boiler Systems, Resistance Heaters
