Home energy ratings (HERS)

New Zealand housing stock is very energy inefficient, compared with other developed countries.

Lack of information has been identified as a major barrier to the uptake of energy efficiency in New Zealand homes.

Our HERS programme

The home energy rating scheme was developed to give New Zealanders the knowledge they need to make informed choices about improving the energy efficiency of their homes.

A home energy rating is an assessment of the energy efficiency performance of a home. It includes the building itself, and the two biggest energy users in a home - the room heating and the water heating systems. A qualified assessor evaluates the home, then generates a report containing star ratings showing the energy performance of the home. The assesor gives homeowners professional recommendations on the most appropriate actions to improve the home's star rating.

The scheme is voluntary and was launched in December 2007. It was developed by EECA, in conjunction with the Ministry for the Environment and the Department of Building and Housing.

Visit EECA's ENERGYWISE™ website for more information about home energy ratings.
