How we manage our carbon footprint
EECA is working on reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, and has gained certification since 2009 through CEMARS (Certified Emissions Measurement And Reduction Scheme).
CEMARS, developed by Landcare Research, is an internationally accredited greenhouse gas certification programme - recognised and accepted in fifty countries.
To gain CEMARS certification, EECA measures and monitors its carbon footprint (or greenhouse gas emissions profile) and makes a commitment to reduce its emissions.
EECA's emissions reduction plan is as follows:
- Air travel - EECA encourages alternatives to air travel where possible, and makes use of existing videoconferencing facilities at all EECA office sites.
- Rental vehicles - EECA encourages staff to select smaller-sized rental vehicles, and participates in ‘City Hop', an alternative rental car scheme that only uses small to medium sized vehicles.
- EECA will implement a pilot project to provide travel approvers with real-time information on the impact of proposed travel
- Energy - EECA has implemented energy efficiency measures in EECA office buildings.
- EECA will use a building management system and undertake a lighting review in EECA's head office to stabilise or reduce electricity consumption.
- Waste to landfill - EECA has introduced bins to collect compostable waste paper, to further reduce paper waste to landfill, and will add to existing recycling facilities.
EECA's CEMARS certification was independently verified by AsureQuality.
